Where digital forensics and eDiscovery meet
Digital forensics focuses on the identification, acquisition, preservation, examination and interpretation of digital evidence. eDiscovery focuses on managing ESI through legal or investigative workflows at scale. The two disciplines frequently meet during collection, evidence validation, investigations and complex data-source analysis.
A matter involving deleted files, mobile devices or disputed user activity may require forensic depth, while the wider case still needs processing, review and production.

Relevant roles include forensic collection specialist, forensic examiner, digital evidence analyst, incident-response investigator, eDiscovery collection specialist, forensic consultant and hybrid eDiscovery/forensics practitioner.

Core technical skills
Professionals should understand forensic imaging, logical and targeted acquisition, hashing, metadata, file systems, mobile and cloud evidence, chain of custody and evidence documentation. They also need to understand when a full forensic image is unnecessary or disproportionate.
Cloud and collaboration environments are increasingly important because evidence now sits in Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, messaging systems, SaaS applications and mobile ecosystems rather than only on laptops and servers.
Legal and evidential understanding
Technical ability alone is not enough. Practitioners must understand scope, authority, privacy, proportionality and the need to preserve evidential integrity. Collection choices should be documented and defensible.
Knowing how data will later be processed, reviewed and produced helps forensic practitioners collect the right material in usable form.

Career progression
Experienced practitioners may progress into senior forensic examiner, forensic manager, digital investigations consultant, incident-response leadership, expert witness support, eDiscovery technical consulting or specialist advisory roles.
