The analyst’s role in the eDiscovery lifecycle

Analysts frequently work across several stages of a matter rather than one isolated task. They may assist with data intake, processing, workspace configuration, searching, review support, productions and reporting.

The precise job varies by employer. A law-firm analyst may support litigation teams and external clients, while a vendor analyst may work across many matters and platforms. In-house analysts may focus more heavily on repeatable processes, governance and internal stakeholders.

Processing and data preparation

A central analyst task is preparing collected data for review. This may involve loading datasets, extracting text and metadata, identifying exceptions, applying deduplication settings, handling archives and validating processing results.

Good analysts do not treat processing as a black box. They understand how settings can affect document families, dates, metadata, searchable text and downstream review.

Search and review support

Analysts often create or test search terms, build saved searches, prepare review batches, maintain coding layouts and help reviewers locate relevant material. They may also support email threading, near-duplicate analysis, clustering, TAR or continuous active learning workflows.

The analyst’s responsibility is not simply to make the technology run. It is to ensure that the workflow reflects the project team’s objectives and that results can be explained and checked.

Quality control and troubleshooting

Quality control is one of the most important parts of the role. Analysts check document counts, fields, family relationships, productions, redactions and exceptions. When something looks wrong, they investigate methodically rather than assuming the platform is correct.

Strong analysts document what happened, what they tested, what changed and whether further escalation is needed.

Reporting and communication

Analysts frequently provide status information to project managers, lawyers and clients. Useful reporting may cover volumes, processing exceptions, review progress, search results, production counts and technical risks.

Clear communication becomes particularly important when explaining technical issues to non-technical stakeholders. The best analysts translate system behaviour into practical consequences.

Skills needed to succeed

Key skills include attention to detail, structured problem-solving, data literacy, understanding of the ESI lifecycle, search capability, quality-control discipline and professional communication. Familiarity with SQL, scripting or automation can become valuable as workloads become more complex.

Legal awareness also matters. Analysts do not need to be lawyers, but they should understand why preservation, privilege, confidentiality and defensibility shape project decisions.

Where the role can lead

Analysts may progress into senior analyst, platform specialist, project manager, solutions consultant, forensic specialist, automation engineer, data specialist or team-lead roles. The strongest progression usually comes from moving beyond task execution into ownership, judgement and communication.
